TL;DR
Judge Netting engineered and welded a custom 100-foot by 25-foot golf safety netting barrier at a 20-foot height at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, CA, protecting the rooftop solar panels from golf balls arriving from every angle.
Overview
Palos Verdes Golf Club installed solar panels over part of its facility and needed a way to protect that investment from golf balls that could strike the roof from multiple directions.
Judge Netting designed a fully custom-engineered netting barrier, cabled and welded on site, to shield the solar array without relying on a standard off-the-shelf netting layout.
Key Project Features
- Custom-engineered netting barrier sized at 100 feet long by 25 feet wide
- Installation height of 20 feet
- 1″ mesh UV-treated polyester and fire-retardant nylon netting
- On-site cable work and welding for a fully custom structure
- Turf protection measures used throughout construction to protect the course
Project Challenges
The work area was difficult to access, and because the solar panel roof didn’t fit a standard barrier design, the structure had to be custom designed on the fly, with cables and welding worked out on site to fit the specific geometry of the roof and the angles balls could approach from.

Solution Provided
Judge Netting built a custom cable-and-net structure using UV-treated polyester and fire-retardant nylon netting, engineered specifically to cover the 100′ x 25′ solar panel roof at a 20-foot installation height. Turf protection was used throughout the job to keep the surrounding course undamaged during construction. It’s a similar spirit of custom problem-solving to the golf netting work at Maggie Hathaway New Driving Range.
Why It Matters
Solar installations represent a significant investment for a golf facility, and a stray shot hitting exposed panels can mean costly repairs and downtime. It’s a specific enough problem that it’s only been solved once before in our project portfolio — at La Rinconada Country Club, another course that needed its solar panels protected from golf balls. This custom barrier gives Palos Verdes Golf Club durable, purpose-built protection for its solar roof, covering angles a standard netting layout wouldn’t address. If your course has solar panels (or any other structure) in the line of fire, schedule a free consultation and we’ll design something custom for it.
