A Two-Sided Range Barrier Rebuild in San Jose
Almaden Golf & Country Club needed new driving range netting on both the left and right sides of its range, and the two sides called for two different approaches. The left and right barriers were built new on composite poles, while the existing chain link fence line was stripped of its old chain link mesh, repainted at the poles, and refitted with new golf safety netting mounted directly to the standing fence. The result is a continuous protective envelope around the range rather than a patchwork of old and new.

Project Challenges
Almaden is a well-kept course, and that was the governing constraint on this job. Range barrier work means drills, lifts and pole-setting equipment operating on and around manicured turf, and every one of those machines is heavier than anything the grounds crew would normally allow past the cart path. Turf protection therefore had to be settled before the first pole went in — access routes, staging areas and equipment positioning all planned in advance rather than improvised once crews were on site. The variable barrier height, running anywhere from 15 to 40 feet across the range, added a second layer to that planning: different sections required different equipment reach, so the sequencing had to account for which machine needed to be where, and when.
Solution Provided
Judge Netting ran the project on a turf-protection-first plan. Access paths were mapped and protected ahead of the equipment, machinery was staged where it would do the least damage, and the pole-setting and netting sequence was ordered so crews crossed the course as few times as possible. On the composite-pole runs, the new barriers were set and the custom-dimension netting hung to the specified 15-to-40-foot heights. On the retained fence line, the old chain link mesh came off, the poles were painted, and the new 1″ mesh polyester netting was mounted to the existing structure — a chain link fence netting retrofit that reuses sound steel instead of replacing it, which kept both cost and course disruption down. The netting itself is UV treated polyester with a coated black resin dye and bonding treatment, the same specification Judge Netting uses on its long-run golf course netting installation work because it holds up to sun and weather without annual attention.
Why It Matters
A driving range without an adequate barrier is a liability aimed at whatever sits behind it — neighboring property, parked cars, adjacent holes and the golfers playing them. Almaden’s rebuild puts 15 to 40 feet of tested netting between the tee line and everything downrange, and it does so without leaving the course looking like a construction site, which is exactly the balance private clubs are weighing when they call.
